Aire Libre Film Screening + Live Performance

Sunday, March 29, 2026 | 3:00–5:00 PM
Art Theatre of Long Beach

Join us for a special screening of Aire Libre, a powerful dance-based film exploring toxic air and soil pollution in Los Angeles and its disproportionate impact on communities of color living near heavy industry and transportation corridors.

Following the screening, audiences will experience live performances by CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Company and acclaimed vocalist Carmina Escobar, artists featured in the film, as well as a panel conversation with members of the creative team and community collaborators.

Together, the screening, performances, and dialogue invite audiences to reflect on the deep connection between our bodies, our environments, and the movements working toward environmental justice.

About the Film

Aire Libre is a collaborative project led by artist Erin Cooney created in partnership with East Yard Communities for Environmental Justice, CONTRA-TIEMPO Activist Dance Company, poet Rocío Carlos, and vocalists Carmina Escobar and Joung-A Monica Yum.

The film weaves together dance, poetry, oral histories, and experimental vocal performance to illuminate the environmental injustices faced by residents of East and Southeast Los Angeles—communities situated among freeways, rail yards, refineries, and other polluting infrastructure.

Through movement and storytelling, Aire Libre reveals the intimate relationship between our bodies and the environments we inhabit—reminding us that the air we breathe and the ground we walk on are inseparable from our health, histories, and futures.
